Movie presentation

Student marketing
  • A lot of feedback we received was the movie title was catchy and easy to remember.  However, the title would be even better if it was slightly shorter.
  • The cast seemed appropriate but could include more teenagers.
  • Film sounds like it would only appeal to younger children and will unlikely attract teenagers or adults
  • The plot is interesting but could be too complicated for younger children to follow, however it is different.
  • Marketing is good for example not using social media is a good idea as our young audience will not see it.

Teacher marking

Title is good and clear, however cast is not well known and do no need all of them and needed more description on some of them. Enigma code was intriguing but still not sure about it
Well throughout however needed more original idea.
The narrative fits genre but would like to hear more and marketing interesting but no well enough developed.

In my opinion, I think that the film idea is original and I would pay to watch it.  But, it does not include very much enigma and because almost all of the cast are young children I'm not sure older generations will be able to relate and that is a problem as it is supposed to have a universal audience.

Practise Editing

These are my first attempts of editing using the programme Adobe Premiere. I was able to create these using short clips from James Bond films and footage featuring parts of New York City and dancing animals.  Over the sequences I created with the footage, I added effects such as fading the music in and out, and warping some shots.
When using Adobe Premiere I was taught in order to make your video as unique and professional looking as possibly it's extremely important to include different transitions and effects to your video. In addition included speeding them and slowing down. As this being my first attempt in editing I think it went relatively well.

Audience

Audience
In this lesson we used the program 'The film industry' and answered these questions.

1. Who creates the content of the media?
I believe that the media physically creates what the audience watches, but the audience decides whether the content is worth watching or not. This could possibly influence what the media creates next, depending on what the audience thinks of it.
2. Could the media exist without the audience?
I don't think that the media could exist without the audience because if there is no consumer to watch the content which the media is creating, the media will lose money and will not produce anything more.
3. Could the audience exist without the media?
I do not think that the audience could exist without the media because without any content to watch, it is impossible to have an opinion on.
4. Does the audience control the media or the media control the audience?
I believe that the audience and the media both have power but the media more so than the audience. This is because the media can manipulate a picture or video to make a person seem better or worse without the audience being able to view the original copy. This also means that the media have more power because it is the only type which is available to the audience, and some people are more gullible than others.
5. The 'Uses and Gratifications theory'
Blumber and Katz created the 'uses and gratifications' theory which is believed to be applied to all audiences when they are consuming a piece of media. The audience uses the media for: personal identification (relating to a character or celebrity and a tough journey they've been through), information (documentaries, newspapers, Google), entertainment (films and music) and social interaction (social media such as facebook, twitter and instagram).

Stereotypical film opening

Stereotypical Film Opening - Aladdin

The film Aladdin even though a Disney children's film consists of a variety of different stereotypes for example only seen briefly in the film opening however in the movie women are eroticized, even one of the main character, Jasmine, wears extremely revealing clothes also the other women are shown to be sexy and exotically dancing.  Which stereotypes females that are non-white to be more sexual and animalistic.

Class Notes
Media institution uses stereotypes because the audience will instantly understand them.  Stereotypes are almost like 'visual shortcut'.  They are repeated so often we assume the are normal or true.

Archetypes - This is the ultimate type of stereotypes. For example, an Essex girl could be described as a big busted, brainless and blonde.

Countertype - A representation that challenges traditional stereotypical associations of groups, people or places.

Representation- The way in which people, event and ideas are presented to the audience.  Basically, the media re-presents something to the public and they can show that any way they want.  These are made by producers (anyone who makes a media text), what they choose to show is up the gatekeeper
(has the responsibility to filter information before it is published).

Narrative - The prestige

Narrative

A narrative is a spoken or written account of connected events; a story.  It is usually some kind of retelling in words or possibly mime of something that has occurred. The narrative however is not the story itself but ratchet the telling of the story.

8 character types
  1. The hero
  2. The villain
  3. The donor
  4. The dispatcher
  5. The false hero
  6. The helper
  7. The father

Class Notes - The Prestige

-Today we learnt about the theories of narrative.
  • Top hats - this old fashion accessory tells us that the film was set around early 1900s
  • There is a parallel action as two different stories are being told at the same time.  The first is an old man teaching a girl a magic trick whereas the other includes a magician performing a trick in front of the audience.
  • The story contains enigma as it has an interesting story so the viewers want to carry on watching, this is shown when the magician is close to drowning and the function of the little girl in the story.  However if you have too much enigma the audience is left confused.

Barthes theory
Almost anything is possible therefore there can be a variety of meanings, also texts can either  be open or closed.
Prestige has action/symbols/enigma
  • Lightening which could symbolise frightened/mixed emotions/surprised.
  • When the bird is taken out of the cage, this could represent a parallel to the other narrative now it is free.
  • Two men are arguing backstage highlights more action.

Aristotle theory (Greek philoopher)
One of the most basic theories is that every production has a beginning, middle and an end.

Todorov theory.
This is has 5 stages:

  • Begins with a equilibrium (a state of normality).
  • Equilibrium is then disrupted.
  • Main character then realises it has been disrupted
  • The protaganist then tries to restore the equilibrium back to ordinary.
  • The final stage is that a equilibrium is restored however it is different to equilibrium at the start.
Prestige
  • The whole narrative contains disruption with lots of chaos
  • Contains an argument and man becomes trapped

Levi-Strauss theory
This theory uses binary opposites.  For example two completely different character paired together.
Prestige
  • Calm narrative vs stressful narrative
  • The bird is caged then freed
  • Old man vs young girl (elderly vs youth)
  • Wisdom vs innocence

UP movie clip - married life

  • Opposites shown red vs blue hand prints
  • Opposite genders
  • Equilibrium is disrupted when they cannot go on holiday, then couldn't have children

Semiotics

Film poster - Warm Bodies

When looking at the image the audience can tell this a comedy horror and romance film.  Romance is clearly shown as the two main character are both gazing at each other passionately and the object in the man's hand are some flowers which symbolise affection between the two.  The colour of the poster is red which could relate to the blood and violence in the film, however, red could be associated with romance once again. The film text on the poster is also significant "He's still dead but he's getting warmer'.  This implication highlights that even though the male character is dead and he was similar to the other zombies he has become more like a normal human and gradually his humanity is returning, another point which supports this is his clothes are modern which makes him look almost ordinary however his pale, white skin shows that he is still going through the transformation from zombie to human.  In addition, the huge crowd of zombies in the background show the lack of uniqueness to them all, also as they are walking towards the audience this highlights the threat from the apocalypse.

Genre Tasks

Harry Brown

In the opening scene, the video is black and you can see the opening credits and hear in the background the group of males talking using a variety of slang and swear words.  When we finally see the gang one of the largest men say 'You ready to become a man blood?', whilst handing him a bottle which is a makeshift bong used for drugs.  The gang are being filmed in an underground tunnel covered in graffiti, therefore, we can tell they want to do this in private away from authorities.  Also, the filming is an unsteady and-and very low resolution which could verify it's only being recorded by a phone or cheap camera.  The men's clothes include overall puffy black jackets, gloves and some wearing caps possibly appear almost cryptic so people will not recognise them or maybe just to stay warm.

The camera mostly focuses on the boy being peer-pressured to inhale the drug, he appears to look quite young, his ethnicity is white which is in contradiction to the stereotypical black gang members the main character seems to be very inexperienced to the drugs and guns.

When he's first uses the drug for the first time all the group members force him to breathe the smoke in further so it can we used to fullest effect, they push him up against the wall and they direct him to hold it in for another ten seconds, which highlights the contrast between them and a normal friendship group.  When the boy finally releases the smoke from his nose he is congratulated with pats on the head and back.  Next, one of the men, most likely the leader say 'Where the phone at?' and brings up a gun to the camera claiming 'This is the real sh*t' and begins to load it.  He holds it to the boy's chest and exclaims 'You're a member for life'.

The next scene consists of a completely different setting, two of the gang members are riding a motorbike through the park shouting and seeking to disturb everyone, the camera angle is held by one of them on the bike and the footage is very unstable.  In the distance we see a woman with a pushchair the boys speed past her screaming foul language until they stop a few metres ahead, reverse their bike and extract the gun.  Two gun shots fired like a warning trying to scare the woman and her child, whilst in the background can make out cackling from one of the boys.  They circle round her whilst the women stand there frozen finally begs them to 'Go away!'.  However, the third bullet is shot straight into her head spilling blood onto the concrete as she collapses.  When realisation washes over the boys the one the back screams at the other 'f*cking go man!' As they approach a road out of nowhere a lorry appears and smashes the motorcycle to pieces throwing the gang members to the ground and the camera lies still on the ground.

What Lies Beneath
This movie clip begins a late evening with a woman exiting her bedroom, she looks partially stressed as she tugs the sleeves on her top down.  A sinister soundtrack plays in the background this already verifies to the audience this is most likely a horror film.  After leaving the room she bends down to collect something fallen from the plant until the steam from the bathroom catches her attention. Cautiously she stands up and creeps slowly to the bathroom door, gradually pushing it ajar she clicks the light on and the bathroom is full of mist from the shower.  The woman makes her way through the long stretched room to her bath tub which is full to the brink with water. The camera then rotates around the woman until it pans to her face, her face full of shock and terror, she releases a shaky breath. The viewers then see a vague figure through the shower glass door, abruptly her head shoots sideways and the body is gone.  The woman then raises her hand to wipe the condensation off the glass the revealing nothing but the other side of the wall.  Turning back to the bath tub the audience sees her reflection looking quizzically into the water. Confusion covers her face as she releases each quivering breath, finally, she cries “What do you want?”

The camera then pans around her to reveal the words ‘YOU KNOW’ in chilling writing.  From this, a theme which could be predicted is revenge and possibly death because it seems as if someone wants to payback or vengeance from something she has done wrong in the past.

Now the music has become less subtle but instead loud, it includes a type of drum beat and brass instruments as the camera zooms into the writing.  The setting changes as we watch the woman sprint down her stairs and through the hallway and into an office/ study room.  She runs to the window however an old computer seizes her attention, on the screen is a type of card game with text saying ‘The winner's circle’ underneath has space where players type their initials in has the three letter word ‘MEF’ written continuously across the bottom of the screen.

The setting of the house tells the audience this woman is extremely wealthy and the slightly outdated furniture and appliances such as the computer could confirm this was filmed late 18 centuries.  A significant icon shown in the clip could possibly be the shower because the first real act where the villain lets the women know that he is in the house.  Also, the computer important because it shows that the person wants revenge when ‘MEF’ is written on the screen.

I like the use of cameras in the film because most of the time you could only see what the woman was aware of, for example, the villain wasn’t revealed straight aware, therefore makes this character for mysterious I think this was done to add suspense.  Another aspect which was imperative was the lighting as if the scene was not shot at night it would be a lot less tense to the viewers.

Guardians of the Galaxy
From this scene, I can tell this film is a type of fantasy film as there is a variety of wildlife that has been created and designed just for the use in this movie.  At the beginning when the upbeat 80's music begins the genre of the film seems completely different, as the dark and gloomy background is transformed into almost like a dance floor for the main character.  The main character illustrates confidence possibly because he has become accustomed to this alien world.

The long shots used throughout possibly try to parade the extra-terrestrial surroundings to the viewers.  The bright orange light is a good colour to choose as it stands out well with the dark gloomy background.  It is also clever how quickly the music is faded out at the end, which could show the importance of the small glowing ball.

Genre Picture Tasks

In this lesson, we analysed the pictures we had taken and described how they are suited to a particular genre.

This image of a teenage boy playing the piano, this verifies the genre is musical.  With the picture being displayed in the day time the audience can tell the film is most likely not going to be frightening.  In addition, you can tell by the boy's clothes that the film is set in modern day and the location is at school, this shows that the film could be suitable for children.

This eerie image displays a dark figure at the end of the hall, you can tell it is a horror film genre because of the lack of bright colours.  It also makes it more sinister as in contrast to the other pictures the figure at the end is mysterious.

From this picture of the teenage boy, it is clear the genre is comedy, as he is holding the books upside down which is seen as comedic.  With his modern clothes and up to date text book the audience can tell the film will be set in the present time in a school.

Film Opening

This video consists of the opening scene from the first Harry Potter film.  This scene is significant because it gives the viewer information about the wizard world however does not actually consist of the main character until at the end.  In addition does not betray too much of the storyline.  The three main character are Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.
