Mark scheme

Film Title: CONNECT FOUR
high band 3, 47 marks.
It was original and the titles were unique and were clear and with high clarity. There was controlled camera work shown and good editing - creating a well finished piece.
The setting and characters fitted nicely into the theme.

Film title: DOUBLED
middle band 3, 42 marks
The story line was good, but not the most original, quite generic.  The sound track fitted with the genre and theme well.
The camera work was slightly shaky but overall well done.


Level 1 0–23 marks
 The work for the main task is possibly incomplete. There is minimal evidence in the work of the creative use of any relevant technical skills such as:
• Producing material appropriate for the target audience and task;
• using titles appropriately according to institutional conventions;
• using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;

Audience - Primary and secondary

There are two types of audiences when considering the target audience for the type of film we wanted to create- primary and secondary. Our target primary audience is the age range between 15-23 both boys and girls. This is because our genre is 'teen drama' so we wanted our target audience to be able to relate to our characters and narrative. Our target audience would become aware of our film 'Untamed' through the different forms of advertisement such as: on Twitter, our website, billboards and bus advertisements. A possible secondary audience would be the parents of the teenagers that would be watching Untamed. This is because they may see the film on the television while their child is watching it and sit down with them. This film might appeal to the parents because they may be able to relate to the character, Carol and the disagreements she has with her daughter, Aubrey.

How to improve our first draft

This is a list of factors which we need to do in order to improve our film sequence:

- Put a colour filter over the moving opening
- Alter the lighting in some scenes to make it more consistent
- Edit the titles so they show up for the same amount of time

This is the link to the UNTAMED official website which we created in order to promote our film. We took inspiration from the INTERSTELLER official website as it looked very interesting, displayed both photos and description about the film which would be helpful to the target audience of they wanted to learn more about the film. We therefore modelled out website similarly to theirs.

Evaluation Storyboard

We created our storyboard to express a clear vision of the film opening which we wanted to clearly portray with specific ideas of: camera angles, sound, mise en scene and editing. We stuck to most of the shots which we planned on using such as: when Aubrey was filmed walking down the street late at night drinking from the alcohol bottle and when Aubrey came into the house and proceeded to have an argument with her mother.
There were however, a few shots and scenes that we included that were not talked about on the storyboard such as: When Aubrey was running out the door and away from home and the last shot when she is breathing heavily and the screen goes black.
We did not film the scene that we originally planned on using at the start where Aubrey and Riley were supposed to be holding hands and dancing together at the concert as our desired location and setting was unachievable to film in. We also did not film the scene where Riley and Aubrey met up in the field just as the sun was coming up because when filming, we could not get the lighting quite right and also, the film opening would have been too long if we had included it.

Title Font and Research

Throughout our film opening, we used the same font, Folio Std Bold.  The way in which we decided this would be the most suitable font was we listed the word 'Untamed' again and again all with different fonts and basically reduced this list on readability and how it this could relate well with diverse genres in the film.  The reason we wanted large bold text is to represent Aubrey's rebellion.

Before we picked 'Untamed' we had been contemplating other titles such as 'Wild', 'Free' and 'Loose'. We really wanted to convey to the audience that this story is about with how a teenager girl deserts her home and runs away and we wanted to associate this plot in the film with the title.  Another advantage of using shorter title than a longer e.g. 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is that it's snappy and easy to remember which could increase popularity.

We selected a white background for our titles because it stands out ahead of the dark background at night, also it can be associated with Aubrey's innocents as the colour white is usually connected to something angelic.













Here is the film poster for Mean Girls. They used a similar large, bold font - just like Untamed. We used this poster in the research period whilst choosing a font for our film opening title as it is also in the genre of a teen drama.
















This is he film poster for the film The Duff. This film belongs in the genre of teen drama and so does Untamed, hence why we used this film in t he research period. This film poster has the title written in a bold font, which shaped our reasoning for using the bold font for our title.

What I learnt from filming

When filming our film opening, 'UNTAMED' I learnt new techniques to express the correct genre through the types of shots I used. Before doing my research, I did not realise that handheld camera shots created a more realistic feel to the film, making the audience feel as though they are a part of the scene. I decided to use the hand held technique when following Holly when she was running down the street to create a more chaotic mood because the shot didn't focus on a specific object or place.
I also learnt that using close-up shots in a scene makes the scene more intimate and professional as the audience are able to see the characters facial expressions. I used these close up shots at the start when Aubrey was walking down the street and then drunk from her bottle. This gave the audience a good chance to see what the character's face looked like, see her facial expressions and become familiar with her character. I believed these shots helped in making the film opening look more professional and interesting as I included a variety of shots.
Another type of filming that I had learnt about and used when creating this opening sequence were Pan shots. These consist of a shot this if filmed at all one level but follow the character across the location. I used this shot when filming Holly walking down the street because it gave the impression that that is what the neighbours would see out of their windows. I am glad that I used this shot because it made this scene seem more fast pace compared to the start of the sequence.

Untamed Social Media Account

As a group we decided to make a Twitter account for our film UNTAMED as it would help to create a fan base and update our followers with news on the film. Such as when the film would be Premiering and when the global release date would be.

What we learnt from making the Social media Account

From making the UNTAMED twitter account, we found that this was a good source of promotion as twitter is used by 30017million on a monthly active basis. Therefore creating speculation and hype around the UNTAMED Film would easily be spread by many. The account was free to make and enabled us to share information relating to the film with our users. To improve our twitter account we could have got sponsors from other brands and people with large amounts of people, we could have also been more active by tweeting regularly and interacting with fans. Reflecting on the twitter account we could have also made Instagram and Facebook accounts to cover all areas and users of the 'social media world'.

Institution for Untamed

As a group we done some research into production companies, so that we could find a suitable institution to distribute our film. A production company is in charge of the founding and distribution of the film, as our film is low-Budget it is important that we find the right institution that is compatible with our film. Especially as  this will be the name 'behind our film'. 
After doing some research we found that Film4 would be the most appropriate institution to distribute our film. Here are the following reasons why: Film4 are an independent distribution company that typically produce Drama/ Documentary/Thrillers/Low Budget, High concept Genre films/Original film ideas /controversial topics.
Our film includes a sensitive and controversial topic around sexual orientation and problems in the home. It also includes drinking problems. As film4 distributes films with controversial topics this could be considered an appropriate institution to distribute our film. Because our film is a low-budget production it  would potentially benefit from a smaller but still well known distribution company such as Film4.

Representation



The 2 characters which are included in the film opening, Aubrey and Carol, are subjected to stereotypes because of their ages and the roles they play.

Stereotypes of Aubrey: She is a rebellious teenager who has arguments with her parents. Not all teenagers are this way, but her character is conforming to the stereotype that the media have built up of her.

Stereotypes of Caroline: She is a worrying mother who inflicts strict rules upon her child and she does not agree with her daughter's homosexuality. Caroline is conforming to the stereotypical image of the older generation which does not agree with gay people which the media have created which are not true for everyone.
